New City Parents Presents to LAPD, Juvenile Division

October 29th 2009 -

LAPD Juvenile DivisionOn Wednesday, October 21, 2009, the New City Parents (NCP) team, Allison Vanore and Jillian Gilbert, presented A Parent’s Guide to Social Media to the Los Angeles Police Department, Juvenile Division during a monthly squad meeting.

Captain Lizarraga invited NCP to the squad meeting to share their findings, research and advice with a group of officers.  Many of the officers were also parents and they had a keen interest in information surrounding social media issues amongst teens.

This abbreviated seminar lasted just under 45 minutes and detailed the major legal and social implications of unchecked social media use by children ages 8 – 15 years old. After a brief introduction of social media, NCP dove into staggering statics about social media usage, sharing with the squad the amount of people currently using social media.  That number, over 400 million active users, actually got a gasp from the audience.  NCP also shared shocking stories of sexting, cyber bullying, and cyber stalking that have hit the media in recent months.  Along with the horror stories, NCP also emphasized the benefits and importance of such technologies and how, if used correctly, social media can further a child’s education, career and understanding of the people and world around them.

NCP and Captain LizarragaFollowing the seminar, NCP and the officers shared tips and other resources on how to talk to children about social media and how to teach them to make the right decisions – decisions that will keep them safe and on the right side of the law.

New City Parents looks forward to a continuing relationship with the LAPD Juvenile Division, pinpointing the needs of the Los Angeles community in order to keep our children safe as they learn and use new technologies.
